MARBLEHEAD COASTAL UPDATE

Residents of San Clemente that oppose the signs approved by City Council went to court this past Friday. A group called San Clemente Citizens for Integrity in Development say the Marblehead Coastal Outlet Center signs don't follow state and city codes as they were approved.

SunCal says they have been working on the bridge since the concrete pour on March 18. Crews have also been pulling weeds and they anticipate resuming street work this month in accordance with a schedule that was discussed with the city. They say they are still dedicated to this project.

City officials say SunCal has not been keeping up with the schedule they provided to the city. The City Council will consider legal options at next Tuesday's City Council closed session.

HOME SALES REBOUND

In April, 2,166 homes sold in Orange County - the first time the number has climbed over 2,000 since last August. Buyers snatched up homes in the under $500,000 price range, bringing the median sales price to $500,000, the lowest median in 4 years.

Market time also slid to 5.82 months, meaning it would take that long for shoppers at the current rate to purchase all of the existing inventory. Last year, it was 8.0 months.

Another record was set in April - lenders foreclosed on 898 homes and condos in Orange County, the highest monthly total since DataQuick started tracking foreclosures.

GROUPS FACE OFF OVER NORTH BEACH PLAN

Both supporters and anti-development foes have mobilized over the last couple weeks in response to the LAB's proposal for The North Beach Project, a commercial and cultural village proposed for city-owned land where a parking lot currently sits.

As the project begins the Environment Impact Report process with the City, both groups are putting out their message to neighbors and residents. A traffic and parking study is due out this summer and will have a large impact on all the projects currently proposed for the North Beach area.

Supporters, called Pro North Beach, are being led by John Dorey. He claims that this is a chance to create a Gateway into San Clemente and futher change in a neighborhood that is run down and tired. Charles Mann, who helped spearhead the No on Measure C group, is taking a leadership role in the anti-development group who fear density and parking issues and would prefer to see a park on the proposed LAB development site.

ANOTHER SAN CLEMENTE SMOKING BAN?

Tonight, San Clemente's parks commissioners will meet to discuss the idea of banning smoking from San Clemente's public parks and trails. The meeting is open to the public.

Smoking already is banned on city beaches, on the Municipal Pier, in coastal canyons and in specified inland canyons. Last month the City Council suggested the possibility of extending the ban to the San Clemente Coastal Trail, which borders the beach, and several coastal canyons. The city parks commissioners suggested including all public trails in town and all city parks. The Parks and Recreation Commission will consider forwarding recommendations to the City Council, which has final say.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. tonight in the Community Center, Avenida Del Mar at Calle Seville.

HOMES SALES ARE UP

Once again numbers show home sales are on the rise. Buyers who were on the fence feel they can now afford to buy a home. Last week there were over 2,500 homes and condos in escrow in Orange County. That number is close to the same number we saw in April 2006.

Inventory is down. Currently there is about a 6 month supply of properties with those under $500,000 account for almost of the homes currently for sale.
